Fish tank film review
The film "Fish Tank" is about a teenager aged 15
(Katie Jarvis who plays the character Mia) who lives on an estate in Essex with
her mother and sister. She doesn't really have much of a family around her due
to the fact that everyone yells at one another and there is no
communication amongst each other either. The film shows Mia's live
and portrays her as a aggressive teen with a dream to succeed in the
world of dance. Whilst this story line goes ahead in the film,
we are also find out that Mia has a unsteady relationship with her mother’s
boyfriend (Connor) which causes complications in terms of her life and
confusions in her head. As the film continues, we begin
to empathize for the main character (Mia) due to
the circumstances which she is in however as the film comes to the
end, there in much confusion in Mia's mind which results in her doing a number
of weird, unusual things. I think the director Andrea Arnold; who is also the
writer of the film; wrote and produced this film in order for people to see how
lucky they are and that these sorts of events do take place
in family's as well as some do live like this. It allows people to
know what’s going on around them and that there are people out there in similar
positions. However despite this, i did not really think much of the story line
in the film as it kept changing and there were also a lot of unanswered
questions leaving the viewers confused with what actually happened.
Also, as the viewers of the movie, we expected the main character to make it
big in dance or even get a happy ever after however this was not present and
she was contempt with just moving from Essex to Wales.
The main character
Mia; played by Katie Jarvis; was a really good actor in terms of the story line
of the film and i felt that she suited the part very well. Despite the fact
that she had not had any acting experience, she seemed to know what she was
doing. Katie Jarvis plays the part well as it sends out a message to the
audience which is that the basic idea of the movie is survival and that kids
who are brought up in these sorts of positions make do with what they've got
and have to live with it (survive). Mia's mother; played by Kierston Wareing;
makes Mia's life hell as she doesn't look after her daughters the way that she
should. By Her mother acting the way that she does, it emphasizes the fact that
she has no one in her life, not even her mother to look after her. Her mother
uses bad language towards her and does not treat her correctly. This shows
people how some kids lives are and there are kids out there with similar
day-to-day events so it's not as if this movie is completely made up, in fact
it represents the lives of some rare teenagers.
The film is aimed
at the younger generation in order to make them appreciate what
they've got compared to others of the same age. It allows them, to empathize
for them and possibly take action and help others out who are
less fortunate than us. The main characters allow this to go ahead as
Mia is a teenager who lives with her mother and younger sister in a council
flat in Essex. It's not a luxury apartment, nor does she have people around her
that cares about her therefore it's showing people the other side of the lives
(how the other half lives). The genre of the film also adds to this point as
it's neither a fantasy film nor a fictional movie, in fact it's a drama
therefore suggesting that this could happen and does happen.
Overall, the film
"Fish Tank" is a film in order to make teenagers of the same age of
the main character (Mia) feel empathy and therefore attempts to make
them appreciate what they have. Also it may result in them wanting to
help out others or make them less ungrateful in terms of what they
possess. I personally did not like the story line of the movie although it's
message which it sents out is strong and therefore does make you think
regardless of whether you liked the story line or not.
