Ill Manors Trailer Analysis

What are the typical codes and conventions of film trailers - what information is usually provided?
The typical codes and conventions of film trailers are...

  •  Text or pop-ups used
  • voice overs
  • range of edits and shots
  • dramatic scenes
  • enigma codes
  • named instituations
  • named directors, characters and big named stars
  • release dates
  • any other information
The typical conventions of film trailers consist of voice over and pop-up text which informs the audinces on who the characters are and/or are enigma codes to draw in viewers to watch this film in the cinema. The pop-up text is generally used quite a bit as famous actors and stars are named in order to attract a glamour fan base. Also, another factor which is a typical convention of film trailers is that they include a range of different edits, varying in order to show/ portray the mind set of characters. A range of edits and shots allow different scenes in the movie which therefore creates the suspense and enigma codes which draw in viewers. Other typical conventions are that film trailers end with the release date in order for the viewer to know when the film is coming out. This is generally shown last due to the fact that its one of the most imporatant factors of the trailer and therefore should be the last as this makes it the most likely thing to be remembered by the audience.

How are trailers distributed?
Trailers are distributed in different ways depending apon the franchaise of the movie or even the factor of them having a high/low budget film. For example, a big budget Hollywood blockbuster would have a big name in terms of its distributer compared to a low budget British film. A Hollywood film would have more exposure in terms of the plot and the characters in the film which therefore would be exposed through the distributor.

How does Ill Manors use trailer conventions?
Ill Manors uses the typical conventions of film trailers in certain ways. Firstly, the trailer for Ill Manors has a voice over introduces enigma codes in terms of the story-line of Ill Manors.

Who is the target audience? Does it have a unique selling point or use particular techniques to appeal to the audience? Consider the way the scenes are edited together – does the trailer give away any clues about the narrative? Are the main stars visible in the trailer? Is there information about the director of the film? Is there information about the release date? Is a narrator’s voice-over used?

How has the genre of the film been represented through characters, settings, lighting, colour, music, camera shots/movements/angles and editing?

Ill manors research

Research all the Institutions involved in the production of Ill Manors. List them with a summary of what their contribution to the film was...
The Studios producing the film "Ill Manors" were Film London Microwave, BBC Films and Aimimage. These institutions are low budget british film industries in terms of making and funding films. BBC films is quite a well known industry who help out and have helped out a lot of people and films in terms of the production funds.

How much Ill Manors cost to produce (its budget)?
The film "Ill Manors" cost £100,000 to produce and made £453, 570 from box office alone. In order for Plan B to raise the funds for post-production, he went on tour in 2010 and 2011 performing "The Defamation of Strickland Banks Tour". The rights to Ill Manors were sold to Revolver Entertainment in April 2011. The Studios producing the film "Ill Manors" were Film London Microwave, BBC Films and Aimimage.

How was Ill Manors funded?
Ill manors was funded due to Ben Drew (all known as plan b) going on tour in an attempt to raise enough money to just get the production side of the movie ill manors on its way. The tour was called "The Defamation of Strickland Banks Tour" which helped fund the film.

What is the target audience for Ill Manors?
The targeted audience demographic for ill manors would be the 15 - 25 year olds, generally the teenagers as they can relate to the situations going on in the storyline of the film. Also, it because of the fact that teenagers of this demographic like to watch films which involve a lot of swearing, violence and action along with a good plot therefore appealing to them in this sense.

Who is the main distributor of Ill Manors?
The main distributor of ill manors is revolver entertainment as the rights to the film were sold to them in April 2005. The film made a total income from box office alone, £453, 570 which is a huge profit to the £100,000 budget.

Comparing ill manors to a big budget blockbuster you can see many similarities as well as differences.
A similarity which both have is that the protagonist or main character, in the end survives or makes it big in terms of the storyline of the film. In ill manors, the character is the only one to survive out of his gang and goes off to make something of his life. A difference between the two; other than the obvious fact that its a low budget film; is that the characters in the movie weren't well recognised actors but just normal people acting.

How does the trailer for Ill Manors hook audiences into the narrative and pose questions that the film will answer? Identify 3 ways/techniques.
The trailer for ill manors promotes the film and appeals to the age demographic aimed at by this film, the 15 - 25 year olds. This therefore represents the amount of different story lines in the film and the fact that they all link and cross in one way or another. Also the use of different spectacles in the trailer therefore hooks an audience.

Think about the certificate of Ill Manors (18 certificate). Research film certification and outline what is deemed acceptable for this certificate. What is the difference between a 15 certificate and an 18 certificate?
The different between an 18 certificate to a 15 certificate is that a 15 certificate includes such things as strong language, a lot of scene consisting of violence, strong indications of sexual content as well as sexual scenes, discrimination, regular use of drugs and nudity.
A 18 certificate on the other hand is similar but with more of certain topics. It includes such things as extreme strong language and regularity of swear words. A vast use of sexual language as well as sexual intercourse,  blood and gore and much references to discriminatory language and ethnicities.

Media Pre-Production

 Media Pre-Production

The genre of the program which we are thinking about producing for our coursework is the theme of crime drama as this in a very interesting genre in terms of the programs like this on television. Also it appeals to the targeted audience; which is the 15-35 year old demographic audience.
In order to create an effective crime drama which follows the general themes and concepts of a film in this genre, i'm going to research some film clips and analysis them using media language in order to see the key conventions of a crime drama production. Its also good as this would be something which i'd like to look upon and hopefully create a production of that caliber.

The first program is a crime drama film known as Dexter. The program is a television drama which involves an American serial killer who goes by the name of Dexter hence why this is the name of the drama. Dexter Morgan is a Miami forensics expert and spends his days solving crimes but as darkness arises, he spends the nights committing them. The clip above is the title sequence of Dexter which introduces the main character; who arguementally is the protagonist and the antagonist in the drama program. In the title sequence, the first person you see is Dexter therefore the title sequence is showing and basing it around him which is an enigma code as we; as the audience; are able to see that the drama is based around this guy; one way or another. Another enigma code used in the title sequence is at the very beginning where he swats a fly/mosquito on him arm. This suggests that he is a cold blooded killer in the drama. The fact that there is blood in the scene also can represent the fact that he's a killer.

The use of camerawork also connotes this as the actions which he is doing as quite aggressive and expresses the nature of violence. An example of this is the use of the knife for slicing meat but then using it to pick the meat up. The extreme close up on these shots show his actions as violent as he is picking up the meat with no care in the world. There is also a constant use of objects to portray weapons such as the constant shots of the knife. At the end of the breakfast scene, a knife is left on the plate with ketchup on there to connote blood. Other objects in the title sequence for Dexter which have similar meanings is like when he uses the floss. He wraps it around his finger tightly as if he was going to strangle a person to death. The other object which has the exact same connotation was when he's pulling up his shoe laces. The constant use of close-ups and extreme close-ups in the entire scene help to portray Dexter as this killer and emphasizes this point drastically.
////(((screen shot)))////
The lighting used in the entire title sequence; which is part of the mise en scene; is quite bright (high-key lighting) and therefore the viewers are able to see the entire main character. This is important as the title sequence is not beating round the bush but instead are letting the audience know exactly what this person looks like. In crime drama's, the producer can go either way in terms of the lighting. The lighting can be high-key or low-key lighting. To build suspense in a crime drama, you can use low-key lighting in order for tension and suspicion as the viewers would not know who the killer is and therefore would keep there attention. However, Dexter does the opposite and allows the audience to know exactly who the killer is, as well as going as far as making him the main character (protagonist) of the drama. In the screenshot above, the mise en scene in terms of lighting is high-key lighting, however the fact that there is shadow covering half his face connotes that he's a villain in the drama.

The mise en scene in terms of sound used is contrapuntal as it does not really suit the mood of the title sequence, however despite this, it brings a lot of mysteriousness and really makes the scene more exciting from a audiences point of view. The sound is also non-diegetic due to the fact that when the acting was taking place, no one could hear this music and it was added during editing. A stereotypical crime drama has quite intense, non-diegetic music as a title sequence or trailer therefore by going against the trend, you are making the production seem usual which could in theory keep viewers watching. Due to this, i therefore think that when producing our crime drama, we should have non-diegetic, contrapuntal sound in the background.

This is the opening title sequence from the American crime drama show "Person of Interest" which is about a former CIA agent who now lives in New York, chasing after people who are about to be killed or are going to commit a crime. His job is to stop the events from taking place whilst working with a computer genius who built a supercomputer; after 9/11; which identifies all people about to commit crime. The opening title sequence of "Person of Interest" is aimed very much at the audience due to the language used. They say, "You are being watched...". This therefore engages the viewer(s) as they are being specifically targeted by this television show. Also, the dialogue used to say this is diegetic as it's added in during editing as a voice over. The music used in it is the stereotypical backing track for a crime drama production as it's quite dramatic and fast therefore going with the pace of a crime drama production. In other words, the backing track for the title sequence is parallel sound.  I personally like the way that it targets the audience and involves them in the opening sequence. I also like the graphical editing used on the opening sequence as it portray a CIA or MI6 sort of feel to it therefore adding a factor of realism to the show.

The first episode of "Person of Interest"; also known as the pilot episode; built up suspicion in terms of the character(s). The protagonist; who in the scene above is known as "the bum", does not give a name and is quite to himself. He has special skills and the audience gain knowledge that he has been in some kind of government secret agent role. As the audience, we know this due to the dialogue exchanged at 2:11 as well as the beginning fight scene.

In the beginning scene of the crime drama, there is a fight scene therefore appealing to the 15-35 year old demographic audience. From i personal opinion, i absolutely love this show, and has always kept me watching as it's full of mystery, crime and conflict hence why i think that this would also appeal to others of a similar age to myself.

The camerawork used in the clip above seems like a handheld camera as it seems to shake quite a bit, especially when the fight scene begins. It seems to follow the action a lot and zoom in and out slight such as at 1:15. Also, there were a few high angled shots during the fight scene which made the it look as if we were watching the fight from a cctv camera which i thought was a very clever idea as it links back to the title sequence when they say "You are being watched...". The use of high angle shots therefore confirmed this factor said in the title sequence.

In terms of the mise en scene of "Person of Interest" the props used such as the bottle of alcohol are typical objects seen every day depending on the situation. For example, you see a lot of drunk homeless people on the streets and this follows that convention of realism. Also, the fact that we are able to see a guy with a gun in the scene follows the conventions of a crime drama as this connotes a crime about to be committed. The clothing worn by "the bum" were tattered old clothes which were dirty therefore following the stereotypical look of a homeless person. The fact that he had a huge beard and long hair adds to the realism and genuinely makes you think that he's just a typical homeless guy when in actual fact he's much more. If the homeless guy had short hair this would make the scene seem unrealistic and this would also look a little silly and usual (in a bad way).

This is the Original Batman series which came on television every week. I really like the opening for the old Batman Tv series as in the first 50 seconds of the clip, much tension is built up through the suspense as well as the dilemma which has occurred. The series starts off with dramatic dialogue followed by a call to Batman (who is the protagonist of the series along with Robin). A lot of drama was produced due to the sound used, which is part of the mise en scene used in the first 50 seconds of the clip. The sound/ backing track of the scene was non-diegetic sounds as the music could not be heard by the actors at the time. The use of this non-diegetic sound creates suspense and tension as its paralleled sound to the dialogue and situation. At the end of the 50 seconds, as the main protagonists leave the shot, the music becomes higher and ends therefore suggesting that they are the heroes in the series as everything they do is dictated by non-diegetic sound. The other non-diegetic sound used is at 2.10 which is the voice over which gives an quick over view of the two heroes and informs the audience who is who.

The title sequence comes 52 seconds into the scene. I really like this as the audience are not shown the title sequence at the beginning of the first series, instead they have a scene which creates tension and suspense and then they introduce to us the protagonists who inevitably are going to resolve the situation. The story-line of the Batman series relates to Todorov's theory which is that every great movie or television show will consist of a beginning equilibrium; followed by a disequilibrium (or a dilemma), which is finally resolved and a new equilibrium is formed. This Tv show follows Todorov's theory as in each episode, there starts off with an equilibrium of some sort; which is disrupted by an antagonist; but in the end is resolved by the protagonist(s). In the title sequence, the backing track is the well known tune for the Tv show therefore being iconographic music for this Tv show.

Along with the sound, another part of the mise en scene; used in the clip which i'm going to analysis; is the lighting used. The two protagonists are well lit and the type of lighting used is high-key lighting. This is important as this type of light makes the characters seem important and the fact that we are able to see them properly means that they have some kind of significant role in the series. If they were shown in the dark with low-key lighting, this would represent the characters as villains in terms of the film as they would look more mysterious. This would therefore confused the audience and would not be a very effective scene.

The trailer for season 13 CSI is very intense in terms of the way that the editing has been put into place. The form of editing for the trailer is in montage form in order to show different clips from various scenes in the series. It's also in montage form in order to show whats going to be shown (whats to be expected) throughout the series so that new audiences and viewers know what CSI is all about. The task for our coursework is to produce an opening 2 minutes of the first ever episode of a series. This therefore means that we will not be producing this in montage form. However, despite the fact that we will not be using this factor of these Tv dramas, we can still use the concepts and typical conventions of the genre of Tv drama which we are creating. In terms of CSI, there is a lot of action used to attract its target audience.

The location (setting); in terms of the mise en scene used; follows the typical conventions of a crime drama as  it involves some sort of detective agency as they are at some kind of police station. This therefore means that crime is taking place and that the point of view which we will see could be from the protagonist(s). Another factor of mise en scene which is used in the trailer is the actors expressions and movements. For example, 28 seconds into the trailer a guy is holding a gun to another. By the situation as well as the actors expression, you can tell that the one who has the gun to him is the villain or antagonist; in terms of the series. Also, the fact that he's not too shocked or scared of the fact that there's a gun to him implies that hes the villain as he knows the protagonist legally cannot shoot him.

The other factor of CSI which creates the mood of the genre ( crime drama series) is the on screen text which appears in between cuts/scenes. The text used consists of "ITS NOT JUST A CASE... ITS NOT JUST A CRIME... ITS PERSONAL". This intends to the audience that there's more to the story-line than just the crime. Also, the fact that the on screen text is bold and in capital letters emphasizes the words that little bit more which makes the seem important to the viewers.

The poster for CSI is predominantly dark in terms of the colours which are used for the design. The main colours consist of black, white and dark blue. These colours portray a crime drama sort of series that involves a lot of action. The minimalist design does not give too much away with what the story-line may be however, the fact that there is a person placed in the center of the poster (in front of the other characters) connotes that he may be the protagonist in the series. It follows the conventions of a typical crime drama series due to the openness of the poster, not giving too much away as well as using the minimalist design to portray a sense of mystery.

In terms of our production, are idea is to use a non-linear style narrative. The film will begin with the ending and rewind back to the start therefore showing how the situation occurred. This would be the selling point of our urban crime drama as this will make it unique in comparison to the other urban crime drama productions available. In order for it to follow the conventions of a crime drama, we will have to take into consideration a few different, successful crime drama series. Also, in order for it to have a bit of an urban vibe, it'd be good if we were to take in consideration films such as Adulthood, Kidulthood and even Ill Manors as these involve the gritty crime which takes place in some areas that can relate to our production.

Preliminary Exercise Evaluation

Preliminary Exercise Evaluation

The brief for our preliminary exercise was to create the first 30 seconds of a film opening. The first 30 seconds had to include a person walking through a corridor and opening a door. Once entered the room, there had to be an exchange of dialogue before the clip ended. We also had to use an over the shoulder shot when exchanging the dialogue, whilst keeping the 180 degree rule in mind. Our first thought; on the preliminary exercise; was that we needed to start off with a genre before deciding the setting and the dialogue which would be exchanged. We had a group consisting of four members including myself: Hargio; Vinisha and Samuel. We also pitched an idea based on the genre of what we think the preliminary exercise should be. In the end, we decided to do a romantic drama scene as it would appeal to the 15-35 demographic audience and it was unique in terms of our class as no other group were doing this genre for their preliminary exercise.

Once coming up with the genre, we figured out the dialogue which was going to take place and from there drew up a storyboard which included all of the different shots which we were going to use, the narrative of the film, the actions which we were to do and the dialogue which was to be said. Also, the length of each shot/cut was included so that we knew how long the film was roughly going to take up so that if it was under 30 seconds, we could tweet it slightly to fill the entire duration. The shot list; which we made whilst drawing up the storyboard; helped a lot in terms of the production side of the film as we were able to efficiently film the scene with the shots which we needed before shooting other angles for more engaging views; to create suspense.

A shot which I like is when the rose is being dropped by the protagonist as the shot is so meaningful. There’s no dialogue however, the connotation of a red rose being dropped suggests broken heartedness and even though the audience does not specifically know what’s happened, they are able to work it out due to these enigma codes.

In terms of the pre-production side of things, I’d have liked to create some more detailed storyboards, in order to show the idea’s and processes which went through our minds whilst preparing to film. I also think that next time we need to have a much larger shot list in order to ensure that we have a variation of shots from long shots to close ups as a different type of shot can portray a scene differently to another. This will therefore have a different impact on the viewing audience. Another factor which I’ll take into consideration when making the real production would be choosing an appropriate setting. Costa was a decent setting for a romantic drama however, I felt that the fact that it wasn't a proper Costa coffee shop, it lost a lot of realism as it looked as if it were a normal table with food (canteen).

Overall I think we did a somewhat decent job of the preliminary exercise however there were a lot of things which I would like to do differently in the future in order to make the film better. Looking back at the film, it was okay after the production and editing. Some of the strengths of the film were that the cuts were on time, the continuity editing was good and the film seemed to flow quite well. Also, the extreme close ups used; such as the close up on the eye; really portrayed emotion which was as intentioned however despite this, it broke the 180 degree rule as the shot reverse shot for the dialogue was on the right side of the actor but when the close up appeared it was on the left eye. This therefore made the film seem as if the person has got up and switched sides. Along with this, there was a lot of background noise as well as unwanted people in the background; such as cleaners. The background noise was quite annoying as this overpowered the sound and made the dialogue pretty hard to hear. When creating the final production for the media coursework, I’m going to take the factors listed above into consideration in order to ensure that it’s even better than what we produced for the preliminary exercise. Overall I think we did a somewhat decent job of the preliminary exercise however there were a lot of things which I would like to do differently in the future in order to make the film better.

Ill Manors

The artist (rapper) Plan B released an album know as "Ill Manors" in April 2011. Earlier this year; along with this album; a film was also made which portrays the lives of different characters living in council estate flats. The film is written and directed by Ben Drew; also known as Plan B; and is set in Forest Gate(London). The film Ill Manors is a Multi-character based story and follows 8 main characters. The film follows their lives and the fact that they fight for survival and respect where they've grown up. Each of the separate main characters lives are linked in some way and each of their stories are represented by a different song by Plan B and Al Shux.

The record labels for the sound track "Ill Manors" are 679 and Atlantic Records which are quite big record labels; especially Atlantic Records therefore showing how big of a hit it must of been.

Film poster for Ill Manors

"The Ill Manors project – a movie and soundtrack album – was trailed by the phenomenal, Shostakovich-sampling title track, and its mind-blowing video. "Ill Manors" flipped hug-a-hoodie logic around 180 degrees, its message: "you're RIGHT to fear the poor; here's WHY...". A thrilling response to the riots, it was an icicle down the spine, menacing George Osborne & co from across the street." This is a sample from the review of the newspaper The Independent and their response in correlation to the music video.

Media forms:
In the music video for "Ill Manors" the media forms used are there and input in order to engage the audience in the song and furthermore, into watching the film. The types of shots used such as long shots were used in the music video in order for the audience to see the background and allow them to notice the setting which the characters are in. This therefore hints and gives away the setting based around the film "Ill Manors" and draws in the teenage demographic due to the fact that the scenes in the background involve a lot of violence. The editing used in the music video is fast paced which shows a lot more and emphasizes the violence which appeals to it's audience. Also, the pace of editing follows the stereotypical/ usual music video therefore appealing to it's target audience. The Lyrics in the rap songs challenge stereotypical views and opinions which results in a controversial debate on whether or not these views are correct or just plain biast.

Media representations:
The representations of the music video and the lyrics portrays a dominant ideology in terms of what people think of council estate kids. The lyrics challenge these interpretations and tells people that not all kids who live on council estates are violent criminals that don't have a heart, nor brain. By challenging these dominant opinions, this forces people listening to think about their own views on the matter and reinforces the ideas which people have.

Media institutions:
The music video has a counter-hegemonic approach in terms of poor people and states that poor people; who live on council estates; should be listened to more instead of just being pushed to one side and ignored. Plan B produced the music video in order to create tension between two types of people, the upper-class (usually in categories A and B) and the working class citizens (usually in classes D and E) and challenges both of the classes stereotypical ideologies in order to protest against the government. The song is a protest song which allows council estate livers voices to be heard. The song states that if people are afraid of council estate kids with hoodie and that they are all as violent as each other, then why don't we continue to scare you until you listen.

Media audiences:
The demographic class audience which this is aimed at is the class groups D and E as they are the working class people who don't have very many skill and agree with what the song is saying. They want to be heard and want their opinions to matter. The psychographics groups which it's aimed at is the strugglers  reformers and explorers to a certain extent. The stugglers would be attracted to a song like this as it shows their lives and emphasizes what they don't have compared to others.

MEST2 Initial Thoughts

Group: Hargio, Harpal, and Vinisha

The concept which we have chosen is a crime drama style production for our coursework. We chose to do this as its a very easy genre to pick as there are a lot of these style series on the television each day.

Psychographics

Mainstreamers...
Mainstreamers tend to seek security and be domestic, sentimental and favour value for money brands including family brands. This group consists of a large population of human beings. This advert draws in this psychographic group as families drink coca cola, especially the kids, and majority of people drink it therefore making it a mainstream kind of beverage and hence why it's aimed at mainstreamers. Also, the fact that its Christmas emphasizes it as mainstream as most people celebrate Christmas and hence why it appeals to younger kids as they are influenced by Father Christmas.

Aspires...
Aspires seek status in terms of what they own and tend to be very materialistic. They also seem to care a lot on how they look and are very orientated to image, appearance and fashion. Usually the younger generation are placed in this psychographic group. The advertisement for dre beats expresses this due to the fact that they are expensive headphones which people buy only to impress other and not for the actual reason for buying headphones.  The object itself is of decent quality however materialistic people, usually the younger sorts of people, tend to buy them in order to impress others.

Succeeders...
Succeeders seek control and have strong goals. They a also very confident people in terms of their work business and social life. They tend to buy products of more higher quality and brand choices. The advert shown above for Lacoste relates to this psychographic as the brand Lacoste sells expensive yet high quality clothing which appeals to the rich and wealthy. They appeal to succeeders as they tend to be in higher management jobs and professions in a certain field/area. People who are in this psychographic group tend to care more about the brands of items therefore the brand in this advertisement appeals to them than say a blue inc brand or asda's george brand.

Resigned...
These are the people who seek survival and are very interested in the past and traditions. They emphasise safety a lot and. Believe in familiarity and economy. These tend to be older people, usually retired. This advertisement appeals to this particular psychographic group due to the fact that it represents safety and shows the point that people can get hurt if they are not doing what they can to avoid injury. This psychographic would be more influenced by an advert like this as they stress about safety and would try encourage others to do the same in order to stay safe.

Explorers...
Explorers seek discovery and love finding out new things. They tend to have a lot of energy, individualized and experienced. They value difference and adventure than the standard trend. The first kinds of people to try out new brands and is usually the younger demographic students. The advertisement shown is for a car brand known as noble which may people do not/ or haven't heard of. This kind of advert is for the psychographic group; the explorers; as they would test out the cars brand and the quality of the car to see if it's any good as it's a really uncommon car.

Strugglers...
This psychographic group seek escape and do not have very many skills in terms of what they are good at. They usually buy things such as alcohol, junk food and lottery tickets for a short buzz in order to make them happy for a short while. This advertisment for bingo relates to this psychographic group as they are looking/seeking for a break or escape out of reality. They want to quickly gain money and things which they desire quickly without paying too much for it. This relates as this type of psychographic group tend to gamble a lot in order to double their money and make more and more.

Reformers...
Reformers seek enlightenment in terms of personal growth and Knowledgement. They tend to have independent judgement and awareness. Anti-materialistic however have good taste in objects. They have also attended higher education and selects products in terms of it's quality. This advertisement suits this psychographic group due to the fact that Audi is a good, well-known brand who's cars are always of good quality and live up to what they are meant to do/achieve. Although others would not buy these kinds of things, reformers would as they have attended high education therefore meaning that most of them have good, well paying jobs therefore they can afford cars like these.

Overall, out of the 7 different psychographic groups/categories, i wouldn't class myself in any of the groups particularly. I kind of fit into some of them in different ways. For example, you could say that i fit in the psychographic group known as explorers as i love to buy new brands which others do not have and i like to purchase quite uncommon things. I also like uncommon things to common ones such as cars, clothing ect...
I do select products for it's value and quality than to price however i'm not full on anti-materialistic as i do like to have and possess nice things at the same time,

Representations of products to audiences

The gender aimed at as its target audience is the male market as the car involves a cleaver pun in which majority of males to females would find this more interesting. Also the car (Mitsubishi) is a very powerful car therefore attracting males as they love cars which have power and horsepower behind them. The moving image advert is aimed at families as they're sit in the car having a good time therefore promoting Mitsubishi's as family cars.
A sports car - the targeted audience for a sports car would generally be aimed at the male demographic due to the fact that majority of men to women love to drive flash, fast cars. In order to make an advertisement for a sports car successful, you should aim it at males, possibly doing this by having an attractive women in the same shot as the car.

A diving watch - generally a diving watch can be aimed at either a male or female demographic therefore a advertisement can be aimed at either or both audiences. For a successful advertisement, a diving watch can be aimed at females by possibly having a well known female celebrity, possibly one who is a world class diver and promoting the watch therefore encouraging females to buy the diving watch.

Bottled beer - the dominant or stereotypical targeted audience for bottled beer is usually men and for a advertising company to aim or target the female audience would not be a smart idea due to the fact that females don't really drink bottled beer as it's seen to be un-ladylike hence why it's aimed at the average male demographic. To do a advertisement aimed at males, you can have a typical male drinking the bottled can of beer after a long day of working hard. It's therefore portraying beer as a chilling drink or a drink to have in order to relax after a hard typical day of work.
The advertisements show or represent the fact that men drink beer is the dominant ideology in terms of the gender that tends to drink bottled beer.

Toilet paper - advertisements concerning a gender on toilet paper would be both males and females as both males and females use toilet paper daily therefore meaning that there isn't really a hegemonic target audience in terms of who to aim a toilet paper advertisement. To aim it at males, you could have a man run to the bathroom and somehow incorporate excretion finally leaving the body as relaxing and therefore the best toilet paper to clean up or finish the job would be that particular toilet paper.
Due to the fact that the main character or actor featured in the video is a male, this encourages males to be influenced as they can relate to the male on the advert.

Cigarettes - cigarettes can be aimed at either the male or females therefore it's generally aimed at neither and just targeted at the people who generally smoke them. In order to just aim cigarettes at just women/ females, you could have a female celebrity smoking and therefore making it seem common and cool. Despite this, it's not suppose to be promoted as such and hence why you don't see advertisements promoting cigarettes due to the fact that smoking is a disgusting habit which can lead to an early death.
This advertisement is aimed more at the male demographic audience as there are cartoon males smoking cigarettes. In order to appeal to a female market audience, they could keep the same idea but have cartoon females smoking and instead of it being black and white, the colours could be more feminine such as pinks and purples.

Hi-fi system - generally a hi-fi system isn't usually aimed at a specific audience however despite this, I personally think that the dominant gender users of hi-fi systems would be males as they tend to blast music and especially younger males as they buy them for their room in order to connect their mobile or some other kind of device to it to play/blast music. So if I were to advertise a hi-fi system to a female demographic, I would have the hi-fi in the advert have a mp3 connected to it, playing a predominantly girls song such as a Taylor Swift track as this would influence more females to buy the hi-fi as it relates to what they listen to.
In the moving image advert, the music being played is rap which appeals to the younger generation, more specifically, young males therefore in order to attract a female demographic, the music played could be a Taylor Swift song and colours used could be more feminine to appeal more to the female market.

A domestic cleaning product - the general target audience for a domestic cleaning product would stereotypically be females as most people think that females do the cleaning in the most. This saying as evolved from the name of a housewife. The fact that house-husband is not a term really influences this saying and this frame of mind. So in order to aim this product to a female target audience, you'd have a female using the product; preferably a mother cleaning their kids clothes; getting the job done as usual. Or you could even have a male doing the cleaning however messing it up therefore stating that males can't do the cleaning and females get the cleaning done brilliantly hence why it's aimed at them.
Both advertisements attract more of a female market therefore if you wanted to attract a predominantly male audience, you could have a guy doing the cleaning up and somehow do this in a manly kind of way in order to promote a message suggesting that cleaning is not just a womens/females job.

Trainers - trainers can be targeted at either audience, males or females hence why they vary on television. Generally, running shoes have an athlete promoting them or they associate a trainer with some kind of popular sport in order to connote the fact that if you wear that particular trainer, you'll so,show perform better at that sport in some kind of way.
The print advertisement attracts to females as there is a female celebrity promoting trainers. This therefore encourages females to buy them as they think that the celebrity also has a pair of them and hence why females are attract to the advertisement and lead into buying a pair of trainers themselves. In order to attract a male market, you could have a celebrity possibly one who is famous for a predominantly males sport such as rugby or football, and have them promote the trainer.

Taken

Taken
The film taken has many different narrative theories; in terms of media analysis; which has influenced the producer of the film to make the movie in a certain way following certain guidelines.

For example, the film criteria follows the narrative theory created by Tzvetan Todorov which is the point that in every great film there starts out with an equilibrium, then a factor which disrupts the equilibrium and finally a resolution or a new equilibrium. Taken follows this theory as at the start, there is a normal state of world where everyone is happy and contempt however the protagonist feels uneasy over the fact that his daughter wants to go to France to follow a band tour. Once his daughter arrives in France, her and her friend are taken by a group of criminals; based in France; Who drug teenagers in order to sell them on to other criminals. This is the disequilibrium. As the film progresses, there is a chain of events which take place between the protagonist and the villain(s) which involves conflict. As the film progresses further, the protagonist conquers over the villain(s) in the film as Tzvetan Todorov's theory confirms that there is a new equilibrium in the storyline and the characters seem to have learnt from the situations that have taken place. Todorov's theory is that there is a new equilibrium which is almost like a resolution however is not the same as the first equilibrium at the start of the girl as the characters now live their lives differently to before.

Every great film also includes a protagonist; the main character of the film; enigma codes which control how much the audience know at a point in the film. This also holds the audiences interest as they want to find out about more in terms of the storyline. Action codes (events in the storyline which we know to be important in developing the plot/narrative. Taken includes a lot of this for example, an example of an action code is when the protagonist has doubts that his daughter will be safe in France alone with her friend. This is an action code as we as the audience can tell that this may be an important part which builds the narrative. The film as a whole keeps the audience guessing a lot hence why there are many enigma codes. Despite this, it doesn't create a lot of mystery in the film which allows the audience to engage into the films narrative.

The film also follows a linear style pattern which means that it's in the order of beginning, middle and end. It's done in this way due to the fact that its a big budget Hollywood action movie. The genre: action tends to not confuse the audience as much as a sci-fi film hence why they stuck with a linear pattern as its basic layout for the narrative. Also, the genre is the reason why they have decided not to use a multi-strand narrative as this would confuse the audience even more than a non-linear style narrative. A multi-strand narrative in other words involves many characters who are protagonists and the lives of them are followed throughout the story until the very end where somehow their lives are linked together to a set of activities. This confuses the audience a lot hence the reason why the producer of taken decided to keep the film to a standard linear narrative.

The Paperboy

WWW- It was a very interesting film trailer and kept the audience in their seats. The idea overall was very good and outside the box in terms of any horror film out these days. As a whole, i thought that the music used was dramatic and therefore was parallel sound to the trailer. We weren't shown much on "the paperboy" therefore the audience were intrigued more as they wanted to see this evil creature.

EBI- I personally would have liked the trailer more if we were shown more clips on the "paperboy" however keeping the balance so that we weren't shown too much in the film trailer.

The paperboy is an interesting film trailer which follows the conventions of a typical horror movie through different media skills such as the mise en scene used as well as the music. The music which was played in the background of the film trailer was parallel to the trailer and therefore followed the overall theme of stereotypical aspects of a horror film trailer in order to portray a sense of horror. The whole idea of the film trailer and concept itself is very original therefore captures the audience in a way in which results in them continuing to watch and create an opinion on the trailer. The originality allows views to become involved with what's being shown in front of them, therefore making them intrigued in terms of the movie which they are watching.

The music being played in the background of the trailer was a theme song associated with the exorcist however the concept of the film was different. However despite this, we still know that the film is a horror film due to the fact that the exorcist films are associated as a time-less scary film which everyone has either seen or heard of.

Inner Redemption

WWW- The film trailer for inner redemption was interesting and followed the stereotypical conventions of a stand horror film and trailer.

EBI- Lacked a bit of originality in terms of what was produced and shown as there are many horror films which follow the ideologies of a character being possessed.

The audience knew what they were watching once the trailer started due to the music which had been played  in the background of the film trailer. For example, the conventions of a typical horror film would generally be that the music would be quite daunting and slow yet builds up with pace and suspense. The way Inner Redemption did this followed the conventions which are generally associated with this type of film: a horror film trailer.

On the other side of things, the trailer was very interesting such as all the shot which were used. In the entire duration of the trailer, there were many various high to low angled shot in which created a different amount of suspense and a different mood which struck the audience. The low shots which were used portrayed the character; who was the one who was possessed; with power and therefore people are afraid or scared of the character. The interesting part about the

Questions

All the Institutions involved in the production of Fish Tank. List them with a summary of what their contribution to the film was.
When the production of the film "Fish Tank" was going ahead, there were some institutions involved in the production of the film. These institutions are known as The BBC, UK council and ICF (inter city films). These three production companies have a reputation for working with and producing low budget British films.

Two other Independent British film production companies – their “brand”, as well as current and previous productions.
"Coffee" is a independent British film production company that's been running since 1996, making short films. They've produced a number of short films such as films like "Silence Amplified" and "drop". They are also bring out a short film in 2013 called "Lucid".
Another independent British film production company which i found was "Blast" which has been independently making films since 1994.

Out of the three Production Companies you have researched, which do you see as most successful and why?
Out of the three production companies, ICF films seems to be the most successful independent film company due to the number of films that they had made. As they've made a lot of films and had quite large profits from them, they are most successful in terms of the money produced.

How much Fish Tank cost to produce (it’s budget)
Fish Tanks budget or cost to produce was $3 million which is a small budget in comparison to other films such as big budget Hollywood films. Despite it's budget being only $3 million, fish tank made $2,347,852 in box office alone.

Film budgets – find 5 films made for £5 million pounds or less – what types of films are feasible on this budget?
The zombie diaries(2006) - £8,100
Dawn of the dead - £500,000
Saw - $1.2 million
Halloween(1978) - $325,000
Brain dead - $3 million

How was Fish Tank funded?
Fish Tank was funded by the BBC films and the UK film council in order for it to be produced and put up on the big screen.

Research one other way that British films are funded. Are there any similarities or differences?
They can also be funded through a third party institution in order to get enough money for the film production to go ahead. A similarity between them is that either way the film gets produced due to the funding that's gone ahead.

What is the target audience for Fish Tank?
The target audience for the film "Fish Tank" is teenagers/young adults as it portrays the life of a under-achieving teenager living in a council flat and shows how some kids live in comparison to their own. The film is aimed at teenagers due to the fact that it's purpose is to inform them that not everyone lives a similar lifestyle to them therefore making them appreciate what they've got.

Research the mainstream 16–25 youth cinema market and decide which 3 genres are most targeted at them and justify your decisions with your research.
The three genres which are most targeted at the mainstream market (16-25 year olds) tends to be action films, horror films and adventure films as they create a sanctuary in which the audience can escape from the real world.

Who is the main distributor of Fish Tank?

The role of the film distributor is to release films in order for the public and viewing audiences at home are able to watch the film at home. Films produced in the US are more likely to have a big named company distributing there films therefore making and promoting the film far more than a film produced in the UK.

How was Fish Tank promoted (when it was released in 2009)?
When the film fish tank was released in 2009, it was previewed and shown at a film festival in France in order to see if people liked the concept of the film and to predict it's overall ratings and income/profits.

Fish Tank Film Review

Fish tank film review

The  film "Fish Tank" is about a teenager aged 15 (Katie Jarvis who plays the character Mia) who lives on an estate in Essex with her mother and sister. She doesn't really have much of a family around her due to the fact that everyone yells at one another and there is no communication amongst each other either. The film shows Mia's live and portrays her as a aggressive teen with a dream to succeed in the world of dance. Whilst this story line goes ahead in the film, we are also find out that Mia has a unsteady relationship with her mother’s boyfriend (Connor) which causes complications in terms of her life and confusions in her head. As the film continues, we begin to empathize for the main character (Mia) due to the circumstances which she is in however as the film comes to the end, there in much confusion in Mia's mind which results in her doing a number of weird, unusual things. I think the director Andrea Arnold; who is also the writer of the film; wrote and produced this film in order for people to see how lucky they are and that these sorts of events do take place in family's as well as some do live like this. It allows people to know what’s going on around them and that there are people out there in similar positions. However despite this, i did not really think much of the story line in the film as it kept changing and there were also a lot of unanswered questions leaving the viewers confused with what actually happened. Also, as the viewers of the movie, we expected the main character to make it big in dance or even get a happy ever after however this was not present and she was contempt with just moving from Essex to Wales.

The main character Mia; played by Katie Jarvis; was a really good actor in terms of the story line of the film and i felt that she suited the part very well. Despite the fact that she had not had any acting experience, she seemed to know what she was doing. Katie Jarvis plays the part well as it sends out a message to the audience which is that the basic idea of the movie is survival and that kids who are brought up in these sorts of positions make do with what they've got and have to live with it (survive). Mia's mother; played by Kierston Wareing; makes Mia's life hell as she doesn't look after her daughters the way that she should. By Her mother acting the way that she does, it emphasizes the fact that she has no one in her life, not even her mother to look after her. Her mother uses bad language towards her and does not treat her correctly. This shows people how some kids lives are and there are kids out there with similar day-to-day events so it's not as if this movie is completely made up, in fact it represents the lives of some rare teenagers.

The film is aimed at the younger generation in order to make them appreciate what they've got compared to others of the same age. It allows them, to empathize for them and possibly take action and help others out who are less fortunate than us. The main characters allow this to go ahead as Mia is a teenager who lives with her mother and younger sister in a council flat in Essex. It's not a luxury apartment, nor does she have people around her that cares about her therefore it's showing people the other side of the lives (how the other half lives). The genre of the film also adds to this point as it's neither a fantasy film nor a fictional movie, in fact it's a drama therefore suggesting that this could happen and does happen.

Overall, the film "Fish Tank" is a film in order to make teenagers of the same age of the main character (Mia) feel empathy and therefore attempts to make them appreciate what they have. Also it may result in them wanting to help out others or make them less ungrateful in terms of what they possess. I personally did not like the story line of the movie although it's message which it sents out is strong and therefore does make you think regardless of whether you liked the story line or not.

Presentation Feedback

Feedback based on presentation...

  • Great choice of music
  • How have you missed out the love/sex aspect to song for parallel
  • contrapuntal works well - i can imagine an excellent film scene with a murder over this music
  • more justification/explaination of choice of image is essential here - always be ready to explain your work.
I have missed out the whole theme; aspect; of love/sex in my presentation slide based on parallel sound as i didn't think of going in that direction. I just based the pages on what you expect to relate the title of the song to and not by the lyrics. Despite this, i still think that images which connote love and sex would still suit the title of the song but i have just missed this aspect completely.
The images used on my contrapuntal slides were images to do with heavy metal and punk rockers which relate in no way to the song sexual healing. By this juxtapostion, it results in a page to do with contrapuntal.

Cinematography

Task: Choose two extracts from different eras (e.g. one from the 1940's and one from 1990's) and analyse the cinematography. What are the key differences?

The film trailer for "Pride and Prejudice" is from the 1940's and therefore this is the reason for why the trailer is in black and white (no colour). During the "Pride and Prejudice" film trailer, the types of shots which have been used are mainly medium shots or long shots. The medium shots have been used when a character is introduced in the trailer. The use of this is to inform the audience watching, which character in the film is played by which actor and hence the reason why the shots are not long shots otherwise the audience would not be able to see the actor properly. A medium for this is most appropriate and sensible to ensure that the audience know who is who in terms of the characters in the film.

The long shot in the film trailer; which took place at 0:43 seconds; creates suspense as we as the audience do not know what the characters are doing. Also the shot is taken in the perspective of a character therefore we are able to see what they are apparently seeing. This is known as a point-of-view shot which is used in order for the audience to feel as if they're in the characters position  This creates the feel as if you're in the characters shoes and are in the scene. On the other side of this, this shot creates much tension due to the fact that the other 5 characters in the scene are staring right back at you with a suspicious look on their faces therefore we as the audience are unsure on what exactly has gone on.

The film trailer for "Rocky V" is from the 1990's and comparing it to the previous film there are obvious differences such as the colour. "Rocky V" is in colour whereas "Pride and Prejudice" is in black and white. Another clear difference is the genres in which they both are; "Pride and Prejudice" is a romantic film and "Rocky V" is a boxing film. Looking at the types of camera shots used in the film trailer for "Rocky V", you are able to see a lot more of a variety of them compared to the previous film. For example, the types of shots which have been used are as followed...
- Long shots
- Close ups
- Medium shots
- Low angle shot

The trailer portrays the main character as a hero due to the long shot used in the beginning of the trailer. The use of a long shot is used in order to show almost a silhouette of the main character which therefore shows his achievements and him succeeding in whatever he does/did complete. The use of the close ups in the trailer emphasis's the amount of hard work, dedication and training he had to do in order to succeed however despite this, he still achieved his goal. Another shot which has this same effect on us as the audience is the low angle shot of the main character as he stands over the person which is has defeated. The fact that he is shown in a low angle shot and we are able to see him standing over the person he's beaten therefore portrays him as a winner and represents the power which he has at that moment in time. On the other end of the scale, the use of low angle shots also portrays another person in the trailer with power at 0:47 seconds which therefore suggests the fact that their could be tension or a dilemma between the two characters shown in the trailer with dominance.

Linking back to the first point about the use of long shots, they are also used in the trailer to represent the main characters downfall in terms of what he does in the film. The use of other long shots used in the trailer allows us to come to the prediction that there will be a downfall in terms of the main characters life and this may lead to him possibly being defeated or something similar to this.

Looking both these film trailers, I've come to the conclusion that "Pride and Prejudice" has less camera angles and camera views which is probably due to less technology during the time (1940's), whereas the "Rocky V" trailer consists of way more camera angles; as the film was produced in the 1990's; therefore were more advanced in terms of the available technology. Another fact which should be taken into consideration is that they are both different genres of films hence why you are not going to see a lot of low angle shots in "Pride and Prejudice" as the main character(s) would not need to be portrayed as the dominant person or vice versa.
