Case Study #2

  • identify the main codes/conventions being used (media language, genre, narrative...)
  • analyse the representations (of characters/stars) and how they are constructed
  • identify the institution(s) responsible for the text
  • identify the target audience(s) (demographics, psychographics) and how the text is promoted to them and will appeal to them (audience theories)
  • consider any cross-media connections (synergy, intertextuality)
  • compare with 'Ill Manors' (similarities and differences)
  • evaluate how effective they are

Broadcast media are generally media products such as film trailers, sponsorships and product placement (which is when products are placed in film in a certain place or way to help promote that product). The broadcast media which I have chosen is the film trailer for Skyfall. The Skyfall trailer follows the typical codes and conventions of a film trailer due to the fact that it includes some of the best scenes in terms of the film. Also, it shows the most action packed parts with huge explosions the create suspense. An example of this is the whole of the first scene in the trailer. The trailer shows James Bond chasing a guy on top of a moving train and pursuing him throughout the scene. The shot is quite a dramatic one and therefore the audience are able to see what is to come later on in the film if this is just the first scene.

In the trailer, the audience see James Bond being shot whilst in pursue of a villain and they show him falling to his death. This creates an atmosphere which suggests that Bond may have been killed and this could be the end of the Bond series, therefore the audience would want to find out if he makes it and does defeat the villain in the end. They also show Bond sinking to the bottom of a river therefore implying his death however as the trailer progresses, we see Bond once again therefore the audience knows he somehow survives but they are intrigued to find out how he has done this.

This advertisement for Coke Zero helps to promote Skyfall due to the typical James Bond style backing track and through the fact that the actor is trying to save the women. Also, there is the typical Bond car being the Aston Martin DB5.

Skyfall is a big budget Hollywood blockbuster which is about a MI6 agent (James Bond, played by Daniel Craig) who is trying to find the culprit who once took down MI6. The film cover above advertises the film Skyfall through the typical codes and conventions of film covers/posters. The conventions of the film poster for Skyfall is that it consists of mainly dark colours which contrast white to show them juxtapose each other.
Both film posters; promoting/advertising the film; include a large image of the main actor of the film James Bond. Also, they include the 007 logo in the poster which is a universal sign in terms of Bond films.
The demographic age of the audience for this film is between 12-44 year olds as everyone likes to watch action films. It's also a mainstream film and appeals to the mainstreamers, seekers and escapers; which are the different psychographic groups; who want to get away from reality and just get lost in a big budget Hollywood movie.

This is promotional advertising for Skyfall through the use of another popular product; Coca Cola (Coke Zero). Skyfall is helped in it's promotion due to the advertising of Coke Zero as they are promoting both their own product; and another (Skyfall).

E-Media...
The Skyfall website is quite basic and easy to navigate through due to the navigation bar at the top. Also, the colours used contrast/juxtapose each other therefore making it easy for the users to read the text on screen.

NOMINATIONS/AWARDS
Skyfall was nominated for 8 bafta awards, including best supporting actor and best supporting actress.
It was also nominated for 5 academy awards including best song.
Winner of 3 critics choice awards

REVIEWS
The website for Skyfall includes reviews from various different magazines and popular media conglomerates.

Due to the fact that Skyfall is a big budget Hollywood movie; and the fact that it's a well known name in terms of the film industry as it's a James Bond film; it receives many offers in terms of products and advertising products.
The advertisement poster for this watch is predominantly Black and white following many little colours just like Skyfall's characteristics. Advertising posters linked with this film are made around skyfall as it's a huge movie with huge stars and therefore it'd be advertising the products and giving it more general awareness than the other way around.
