"film noir"

The term "film noir" is an expression used in terms of a typical 1940's Hollywood film production which connotates the filming industries main idea (or concept) which is stereotypical attitudes towards drama series' and film.

high key lighting

low key lighting (reasons for lighting) and what this suggests

setting (what it portrays)

The film trailer shown above is a film called "woman in the window" which is a classical "film noir" movie. throughout the entire trailer, low-key lighting has been used in order to create a calm atmosphere and high-key lighting has also been used to portray the characters in a different way. The fact that a lot of low-key lighting has been used in the trailer offers suspicion towards that character as there is shadows over their faces and the background/setting sets their mood or can portray their characteristics. However, when the characters are being introduced into the trailer, they are shown in high-key lighting so that we can just see them. This is done because the producer of the trailer just wants to show the whole character and not give away their personalities or roles in terms of the film.

When the trailer shows the characters talking and communicating to one another, the background is in low-key lighting in order to create suspicion between them and therefore leaves doubt in the audiences mind(s) as they won't know the role of that particular person. This therefore allows the audience to make their own presumptions of whats going to happen as the film/movie progresses further and keeps them watching the film.

Through the use of low-key lighting, people and objects as seen as or looked upon in a different way to it would usually be seen as in the real world.
